In-Home Preschool?

I'm tossing around the idea of running a part-time preschool program in my home over the summer this year. I thought it might be nice to offer a half-day educational program for 3-5 year olds, especially those who will be entering Kindergarten in the Fall so that I could help prepare them to begin formal school.

Depending on the level of interest I could generate, I considered charging $20 per day (so $100 per week). I'd like to have 8-10 children participate if possible.

So what I'm asking here is: Do you think this sounds reasonable? Do you think it's something worth pursuing? What suggestions do you have for making it work, if any?

We're desperately going to need to find some new ways to generate income with my husband being laid off in a few months so any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Oh, and just for fun, here's a cute little craft I threw together today to go with our upcoming theme at work: Backyard Creatures. :)

  1. That sounds like a great idea. If I could have afforded it I would have signed my girls up for something like that. Be sure that you are planning to charge enough to cover the materials you will be using, though. They can add up quickly!

  2. A summer pre-school program sounds like a great idea! There are probably a number of people who would be interested in sending their child to something like that and $20/day sounds very reasonable to me!

  4. I think that's a brilliant idea! I'm trying to think with the extra cost if I would be liklely to use it or not though...we already have a nanny getting paid $100 a day, so pre-school would be an extra $20 per girl, so $40 per day...$200 per week...but that then means that I'm not going to use my nanny during the time the kids are at pre-school...will I lose my nanny then if I only need her to do partial days???Hmmm...
I think it's a great idea, especially for SAHM's...for moms that work and have their kids in daycare or with a nanny may not be as receptie though. The change in hours needed for a daycare provider could impact the provider they are then able to get (I know there were very few daycares willing to take my girls on a part time status - I still had to pay the 5 day rate regarldess - hence my girls aren't in daycare!). You may have to focus your clientel search more on SAHM's??? Just a thought...that's just from my point of view...I couldn't pay both...then again, then average SAHM may not have the extra $ to pay $100 a week for pre-school either. Just thinking out loud...sorry if this isn't helpful.
A full day isn't an option is it? That's probably too much for kids that young....I'd just be more liklely to do full day, that's the only reason I bring it up.
    Good luck!
